Denise Therese Barry has enjoyed a longtime teaching career, which began in 1968 as a teacher of English in southern France for five years. Later, while raising her three children, she taught preschool in Amherst MA and developed and taught a “Relaxation for Children” program for teachers and parents of young children, using guided imagery relaxation.
Denise studied Yang Style T’ai Chi Chuan with Paul Gallagher of Wu Ming Academy, Hadley MA and Deer Mt. Taoist Academy, VT from 1981 to 1997, including studies with Master T.T. Liang, Ray Hayward, Ken Cohen and Master Kwan. Denise has taught T’ai Chi for over 28 years. Her students have ranged from college students at Mt. Holyoke and Hampshire Colleges to seniors at Elder Hostel, nature lovers at Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary and “healthy living" students at Holyoke Hospital.
She is currently teaching two T'ai Chi/Qigong classes per week for the Northampton Senior Center, the South Hadley Council on Aging and one weekly class at the Loomis Village retirement community in So. Hadley. Seniors of all ages enjoy this relaxing, energizing moving meditation for well-being and healthy aging.
Since 2005, Denise and her husband Bill have been avid students of Mantra Meditation through the teachings of Namadeva Acharya (Thomas Ashley-Farrand) and his wife, Satyabhama (Margalo Ashley-Farrand). In 2009, they were privileged to enjoy a three-week guided tour of Indian Temples, from the south of India to the Himalayas, by their beloved teachers.
Since 2011, Denise has been a student at Sanctuary Healing Arts in Amherst, MA with Haleya Priest and Thom Levy.
Denise is a Usui Reiki Master and a certified leader in Dr. Kataria's Laughter Yoga.
